Rockville MD dental office
How much do you know about sleep apnea? For those who have it, there are legitimate concerns and serious risks involved with this disorder. The good news is that at the office of Drs. Schwartzman, Healy and Offit, we have an outstanding method of treatment that will mitigate the effects of sleep apnea.
There are three kinds of sleep apnea, but by far the most common one, and the one that we treat at our Rockville MD dental office
, is obstructive sleep apnea. This occurs when your breathing becomes shallow during sleep, possibly even stopping entirely. This can occur multiple times during the night, perhaps as many as hundreds of times. The blockage of your airway that is responsible for it can be partial or complete. In both instances, your body is working overtime to keep your airway open so that you can breathe efficiently. The effects of obstructive sleep apnea are typically being tired during the day even after a full night's sleep, problems waking up in the morning, a sudden feeling of gasping or choking during the middle of the night, and sexual dysfunction. Snoring is also a major indication, but since you cannot know if you snore or not, you will need to ask your bed partner, if you have one. When you come to our Rockville MD dental office, we have a device known as SomnoDent. It's custom made, with an upper and a lower dental plate that is fitted with a unique patented component that permits your mouth to open and close, thereby promoting natural and normal breathing. Just put it in before you go to sleep. As with any new device, you will need to grow accustomed to it, but most people can do so in just one or two nights.
